Task Scheduler eerror - 0x80090016: Keyset does not exist

Problem Description:

When attempting to create, view, or edit the details of a scheduled task you receive one of the following error messages:



Cause of the Problem:

Any combination of the following may be occuring:

  1. The "Protected Storage" service may not be running
  2. Crypto subsystem may be corrupted
  3. The user account that is setup to run the task may contain a special character in the user name such as any of the following: "[]{}-+=()';"

Resolution/Fix:
  1. Go into computer management, and under services make sure that the "Protected Storage" service is running and set to Automatically start
  2. Reboot into safe mode
  3. Login as Administrator
  4. Delete the contents of : "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\S-1-5-18"
  5. Reboot the computer
  6. Check the physical user name in the windows User accounts control panel applet. Make sure that there are no special characters or spaces in the user name. If special characters exist create a new user account and transition all files to the new user account. Make sure the new user account does not contain special characters or spaces.
  7. Delete the scheduled task and recreate it to make sure all task settings are correct.
