After installing Service Pack 3 for Windows XP your computer will boot to a blue screen or automatically restart before loading the Windows desktop.

If you are able to see the blue screen it will have the following error code on it:  "Stop 0x0000007E" followed by additional parameters.

The system experiancing this issue has an AMD processor.

Cause of the Problem:

Some OEM manufactures (HP, Compaq, Dell, etc) when building their systems did not turn off the Intel processor specific services and drivers. Before with service pack 1 or 2 this was not an issue.

Either before installing Service pack 3 or after installing service pack 3 (by going into safe mode) make the following registry change to correct this issue:

  1. Click Start, then Run, type regedit and press OK.
  2. Locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Intelppm
  3. In the right pane you should see an entry labeled Start, right click on it and select Modify.
  4. In the Value data box put the number 4 and press OK.
  5. Close out of the registry editor and restart the computer

After restarting the computer verify that it does start up correctly if you are doing this prior to installing service pack 3. If you are running this in safe mode after the Service pack 3 installation it should boot up normally.
