Unable to locate the Microsoft Outlook PST or OST file

Problem Description:

You are unable to find the location of your outlook PST, or OST file.

It is important to note that this is only to find the file for outlook, and not outlook express.

Cause of the Problem:

Microsoft has placed the PST and OST files in a hidden directory to discourage tampering with the files. As a result you will not find them in your my documents folder.

Resolution/Fix:

The default location for storing the outlook PST and OST files is in:

C:\Documents and Settings\user_id\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Where user_id is your login ID/user name for windows. You will find that trying to browse to this path that you will not see the local settings folder by default.

To turn on seeing hidden files and folders you will need to click on the tools menu in any explorer window. Then go to "Folder Options", then click on the view tab. On that screen there is a section for Advanced settings and in there an option to Show hidden files and folders. You will want to check the radio button to "show hidden files and folders".

Press ok to save the changes and close the dialog box. You can now browse to the location.
