Unable to remove missing dynamic disk in Windows 2000
Unable to remove a missing dynamic disk on a Windows 2000 computer. Right clicking on the drive in disk management provides a remove option, but it is grayed out and disabled.
Cause of the Problem:
This is an intentional design to prevent removal of still existing partitions.
To remove the dynamic disk that is missing you must first remove all partitions from that dynamic disk.
- Open Computer Management by right clicking on the my computer icon and going to manage
- Click on the Disk Management option on the left side
- Right click on each volume/partition on the dynamic disk you want to remove and select the Delete Volume option.
- After all volumes/partitions are removed from the dynamic disk you can right click on the missing disk and select Remove Disk
