Unable to remove missing dynamic disk in Windows 2000

Problem Description:

Unable to remove a missing dynamic disk on a Windows 2000 computer. Right clicking on the drive in disk management provides a remove option, but it is grayed out and disabled.

Cause of the Problem:

This is an intentional design to prevent removal of still existing partitions.

To remove the dynamic disk that is missing you must first remove all partitions from that dynamic disk.

  1. Open Computer Management by right clicking on the my computer icon and going to manage
  2. Click on the Disk Management option on the left side
  3. Right click on each volume/partition on the dynamic disk you want to remove and select the Delete Volume option.
  4. After all volumes/partitions are removed from the dynamic disk you can right click on the missing disk and select Remove Disk
