Unable to change home page in internet explorer

Problem Description:

You are Unable to change the home page in Internet explorer even if you are the administrator. Going to the General tab, and to home page the option will be grayed out and disabled.

Cause of the Problem:

This is most often caused by a piece of spyware or a virus on your computer hijacking your browser settings. The virus will change your home page and then add a registry entry to prevent you from changing your home page.

Resolution/Fix:

First scan your system for viruses and spyware with a known reliable anti-virus product such as Trend Micro . Once the system has been found clean of viruses you can then edit the following registry key to regain permission to change your home page:

HKey_Current_User/software/policies/microsoft/internet explorer/control panel/homepage

To change this setting:

  1. Click on start and go to Run
  2. Type in regedit.exe and press enter
  3. Browse the registry tree to get to HKey_Current_User/software/policies/microsoft/internet explorer/control panel/homepage
  4. You can either delete the homepage value altogether or set it to 0 to enable permission to change the home page
  5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for all users on the computer, by logging into their profiles and repeating the steps
